Latest blood test results 'within range' but still feel 'off'?!

Updated: May 17

You have ZERO energy, are struggling to lose weight, your period is all over the place and you know deep down that something is 'off'. You book an appointment with your GP who runs some blood tests and are later told your results are 'normal' with 'no further action required'. You’re left feeling frustrated, without answers, completely overwhelmed, and not sure where to go next.

Sound familiar?

I see this scenario so often when speaking to prospective clients. Before I take on a new client, I’ll often ask if they’ve had any recent blood tests – even if they have come back normal. When I look a little more closely at these results, the results can actually be quite significant. Levels can often fall within the "normal range" but can be far from OPTIMAL. For example, optimal ranges of thyroid hormone, iron and vitamin D, are very different to normal ranges. You can still have bothersome symptoms such as low mood, fatigue, hair loss and weight gain and still have normal blood work.

A good example of this is vitamin D. Traditional guidelines say that if your levels are less than 25 nmol/L, then you have insufficient levels. If they are greater than 50 nmol/L, then you’re sufficient. However, vitamin D is important for a whole range of functions including bone health, immunity and hormone health. The optimal range for vitamin D is actually 100-150 nmol/L to offer optimum health and effective resistance among many diseases such as diabetes, MS and even breast cancer as demonstrated in the table below.

Functional testing can tell us a lot about your health and less than optimal results can show more subtle signs that dysfunction in the body is occurring. Proper testing & interpretation allows us to identify the underlying causes of your health condition and whether you’re at a higher risk of developing certain diseases later on in life.

As a qualified nutritionist and women’s hormonal health specialist, I work with women who want to address the root cause of their symptoms. In my clinic, I’ll always recommend some form of testing to clients and am happy to interpret any testing that has been done within the last 3 months. Although we can get a good idea of what’s going on with your health from your symptoms, testing allows us to quickly get to the underlying cause of your health problem.

Why test?

  • No guesswork; a functional test allows us to identify the underlying causes of your health condition

  • Targeted Personalised Health Improvement Plan

  • Quick & cost effective results

  • Increased motivation

  • Progress Monitoring

What do we test?

Over the last few years, I have learned that the majority the symptoms my clients experience can be due to a hormone or gut imbalance or nutrient deficiencies. I’m a massive advocate for testing and not guessing. I work with the leading private medical and functional testing laboratories to help me to determine the right course of action for my clients. Each testing programme includes carefully selected medical, nutritional and functional tests (including comprehensive stool testing and nutrient profiling) that gives us an overview of how your body is functioning.

Want a more in-depth review of your hormones?

One way I recommend that clients get complete overview of their hormone levels is to do the DUTCH Complete Advanced Hormone Test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) by Precision Analytical and Regenerus Labs. The DUTCH test analyses 35 different hormones and their metabolites, and assesses how your body is processing hormones. Results can help provide insights into conditions such as infertility, PMS, period problems, unexplained weight gain, sleep issues and low mood. It's the most comprehensive hormone test available on the market to identify symptoms of hormonal imbalances. Easily collected in the comfort of your own home over a 14 hour period, samples are then sent to the lab to be processed.

When the results are in, we can then create a personalised health improvement plan to address your hormone or other nutrient imbalances (rather than just the symptoms). I’ll also help you to get your blood test levels to their OPTIMAL ranges to get you to start feeling happy, healthy and AT HOME in your body again.
