We compared the effects of soluble and insoluble dietary fibers on lipid metabolism in rats fed high-fat diets. At 10 wk of age, rats were fed either a high-fat (12% kcal fat), high-fiber diet (HF, control) or HF plus either 35% beta-glucan, casein-derived beta-glucan or psyllium at 20% of the diet. In the HF, an increase in food intake and body weight gain was observed when compared with the HF plus beta-glucan, beta-glucan or psyllium. In contrast, only the HF plus psyllium induced an increase in fecal lipid excretion, with no significant difference in body weight and food intake between the HF and HF plus psyllium. In the HF, the plasma total cholesterol, cholesterol in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride concentrations were lower than those of the HF plus beta-glucan or psyllium. Plasma phospholipid and triglyceride concentrations did not differ between the HF and HF plus beta-glucan or psyllium. Plasma glucose concentrations were significantly higher in the HF than in the HF plus beta-glucan, beta-glucan or psyllium. In the HF, total fecal weight was higher, and dry fecal weight was lower than that of the HF plus beta-glucan or psyllium. The total fecal lipid excretion was significantly higher in the HF than in the HF plus beta-glucan or psyllium. Plasma HDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations and fecal bile acid concentrations were similar between the HF and HF plus beta-glucan, beta-glucan or psyllium.
